It’s been a busy couple of months across the Woodstock neighbourhoods for cleaning, greening and community activations! Here’s a few community led initiatives we’ve been up to, with a BIG thank you to everyone involved!

Friends of Parks:

We’re excited to see that Fairview Park once more has an active group of champions – two cleaning days have already been organised and more is in the works. Beyers Park also had an extensive cleanup, and we’re on the lookout for champions who can continue to look after this park. We’re also happy to report that the trees planted in Queens Park last year have survived the summer.

We’d love to know if there are community members who would be willing to start taking care of any parks or abandoned spaces near to you – if you have ideas or would like to volunteer please reach out via Facebook or email us at [email protected] to join our growing network!

Tree planting:

The City launched a drive to plant more trees and you’ve responded – and some trees are already in the ground! We are still looking for more nominations, especially where there are existing street tree holes. The City has reported an overwhelming response across the metro so things are taking a little longer than expected, but we’ll continue to support nominations as they come in. Remember, if you know of a spot in Woodstock that could use a tree (and you are able to help nurture it as it takes root), fill in our Tree Planting Request Form HERE to keep Woodstock green!

Indigenous planting:

We’re scouting locations for planting local renosterveld in partnership with BoSSIES. Our plan is to identify abandoned kerbsides, traffic islands, and parks and create an urban biodiversity “patchwork” to reintroduce local indigenous plants to the area – drawing in bees, butterflies, birds, and beautifying spaces for community use. If you have ideas for a site that could work, reach out to us on Facebook, or email [email protected]!

Activations:

In March, residents ran a community cleanup / activation day at the old Queens Park High netball court. A big shout out to residents who cleared weeds and litter from the netball court – watch this space for more developments!
